What you are training
A focus session is where a plot becomes a rig: each conventional fixture is aimed, its pool sized with the zoom or the barrel, its edge softened or hardened, and its hot centre placed where the designer wants the brightest light to land. It is slow, physical work with a clear standard, and it decides whether the faces read from the back row. Beginners aim the fixture at the performer and stop; designers aim the hot centre slightly upstage so the spill covers the move and the edge falls off before the cyc. This drill gives you a fixture, a stage, and a mark, and scores where the hot centre lands, how well the pool is sized to the area, and whether the edge does its job.
