What you are training
DMX patching is the paperwork that makes a rig respond: each fixture gets a start address, occupies a run of channels set by its mode, and must not overlap the next one. Get it wrong and two fixtures fight over the same channels, a colour on one unit changes the pan on another, and the show runs late while somebody walks the truss with a torch. Patching well is arithmetic plus discipline: know the footprint, leave room, and keep a map. This drill hands you a small rig with fixture modes and asks for a clean address plan, then introduces a unit somebody already addressed wrong and asks you to patch around it rather than re-address the world. The reveal shows the collision you missed or the space you wasted. It is the most transferable skill on the desk.
After this drill, the plan: The daily plan pairs patching with fixture modes next, so the footprint you allow for is the footprint the unit actually uses.
